Boutique vs Large Resorts
Everyone has an opinion as to which type of resort they prefer. Most people who travel have a favourite resort they return to. Which is your favourite resort? Do you prefer the large all-inclusive types with 2000+ rooms or the smaller boutique types with less then 100 rooms?
Big or small we all have our opinions. Here at Villa Jewel Resort we are so proud to be able to offer a small boutique resort with so many amenities. As you may have guessed my vote goes for the boutique resorts. I love the idea that we offer so much. I embrace the idea that our guest service is exceptional and that we go above and beyond. It is important to us that when you become one of our guests, you will not only receive this exceptional guest service but you will also get an authentic Jamaican experience.
Boutique resorts are quickly becoming the choice resorts for discerning travellers. No longer wanting the crowded dining rooms, shoulder to shoulder lounge chairs by the pool or the waiting in lineups, guests are choosing boutique resorts. Everything the large conglomerate corporations offer, but on a small, more intimate scale. Less noise, less people, less stress causing activities – all the stuff you are trying to get away from by taking a vacation.
How many times have I heard people returning from vacation comment, ‘I had to come home to rest’. Wasn’t that part of why you went on vacation? It shouldn’t be like this. You shouldn’t have to fight for a spot by the pool, wait in line to be seated for breakfast or wake up early to book a tour. It’s your vacation! You should be able to do what you want to do in comfort and style, without feeling like you are being herded like cattle.
Large Resorts
Pros
- Convenient – everything is there for you, you don’t have to leave.
- Many services – multiple restaurants, multiple bars, multiple pools; all-inclusive offers.
- Organized activities- whether its in-house organized events or signing up for off-resort tours, you can be directed in any and all directions of your choosing.
- Location – usually located in a premium area. Most rooms have a view of the sea.
- Upgraded wifi, tv service, room service.
- Amenities – many onsite amenities which can include stores, spa service, discos, meeting rooms, video arcades and VLT’s.
- Affordability – you may find more sales.
Cons
- Noise – they aren’t for everyone especially if you want peace and quiet. Loud rude travellers.
- Crowds, crowds, crowds.
- Line-ups ! – for the bar, for the restaurants, to sign up for excursions.
- Location – situated between other large resorts. That promised sea view is not always there.
- Organized activities – can interfere with your quiet, romantic time. Not everyone likes bingo by the pool.
- Fighting – for your spot by the pool or by the sea.
- Waking up early – to get a spot by the pool or book activities.
- Over bookings.
- Everything is there – since you never have to leave the resort, what exactly are you learning or experiencing about the country you are visiting.
- All-inclusive – you still have to make reservations, wait in line or can’t get into your favourite because its closed on Wednesdays.
Boutique Resorts
Pros
- Affordability – generally more affordable because you get more bang for your buck.
- Smaller Size – private and Intimate – giving you a more exclusive feel.
- Personal service – the service you receive is personalized to your needs. It’s like having Butler Service without paying extra for it.
- Character – unique in character and can become your home away from home.
- Location – can be in prime locations or unique locations. There is the opportunity to leave and explore your surroundings, meet locals and get an authentic feel for your destination.
- Friendly – the staff are friendly and determined to make your stay the best they can. Many times you make a new friend.
- No line-ups – you don’t have to fight for a spot by the pool, wait in line at the bar or wait in line for your meal. Many times the bartender is looking for you.
- Activities – bookings for off resort excursions are tailored to your needs. Depending upon location of resort can be more affordable.
- Amenities – varies with each resort.
Cons
- If you are planning to travel with a large group there may not be enough rooms.
Of course, I am a bit biased here, as I can only find one Con for a small or boutique resort. I personally do not like resorts that have so many rooms that their occupancy is larger than my hometown’s population.
Vacationers look for different things. Some look for a party, others for activities, everything in one location and some just want to relax and reboot. There is a resort out there for everyone. You just need to know what you want and then search it out. Give boutique resorts a chance and enjoy a great vacation.
I would promote boutique resorts to people who want to rest and relax. For folks who wish to get preferential service and service tailored to their needs and desires. If you want to eat fish every day, for example, let your cooks or manager know, and they will do what they can to accommodate you. People who are looking for an adventure should try boutique resorts. Leave the property and go for a walk. If you feel uncomfortable ask for a guide or local to go with you. If there is something you want and you can’t see it – ask. If you want a massage and you don’t see a Spa Menu, ask someone, as boutique resorts usually have contacts in the area and can arrange it for you. In fact, they will be happy to arrange it for you. Boutique resorts are for the discerning travellers.
