Slow Travel – What is It?
Have you ever come home from vacation more tired than you were before you left? Are you that person rushing between work and family and then you try to travel for rest and relaxation? But, on vacation you are also busy checking off a vacation ‘To Do list’ rushing from one tourist attraction to the next. If all this running from here to there is leaving you feeling overwhelmed or disappointed or just breathless, try slowing down. Try the age old experience of ‘slow travel’.
What is slow travel?
Slow travel is simply, taking time when you travel to experience one place for longer. It emphasizes a connection. A connection to the local food, to local communities, culture and families. Slow travel combines aspects of sustainability, mindfulness, awareness and responsible travel to foster a deeper connection with a place and its people. It also means being more aware of your impact while you travel.
Slow travel is about the journey, not just the destination. It’s about allowing yourself to slow down, which allows you that chance to briefly peer into someone else’s life and share that moment in time with them.
It’s about getting rid of the clutter, not the FOMO. Simplify and grow from the experience of slow travel.
Why should you slow travel?
It will allow you to experience the country you are visiting. You will learn about the culture, the food, the people, the arts and music, nature and the animals of the country. Simply, you ‘broaden your horizon’. Learn more about the world you are in. Even if it is totally foreign to you, open your mind to what is out there.
Why exhaust yourself on vacation?
Travelling can be exhausting. Why be that person going home from vacation tired? Once you are at your destination, take it all in before you go off running to become just another tourist with a FOMO. I am not discouraging you from checking out the top attractions, if that is important to you. I am encouraging you to try slow travel and find out what exists beyond just seeing the top attractions. Take a side trip from the attraction and walk around, talk to a local, try local food. These are just some examples on how you can slow down and make a connection. Start slow to become a slow traveller. Take time during your vacation to enjoy the moment. Take home some knowledge that nobody else has, something you learned from a local.
As we like to say at Villa Jewel Resort, have an authentic Jamaican experience. Have an authentic experience wherever you go, be it for a weekend, a week or a month. We love the idea of slow travel and the richness it brings to your vacation. How it allows you to go deeper and make a connection with the things that matter the most to you while travelling. It’s a conscious connection. A connection with yourself, those around you and the world.
Enjoy your next slow travel.
