Construction Continues – Oops We Forgot Something!
Fast forward through the many months of hard work at Villa Jewel Resort. After many loads of materials, many hours of manual labour and money eating construction stuff; we now have a building with walls and a roof. Yippee! It still needs windows, doors, floors, tile, kitchen equipment, bar shelves, paint, furniture, a swimming pool and storage – wait we are missing storage! Oops we did forget something.
I screwed up. I approved the drawings for the building and overlooked storage. My fault. But we still need storage so what do we do now? We improvised. We took half the space from the men’s bathroom in the lobby, built a wall and used that space for bar storage. We should have done the same with the Ladies bathroom but the pipes were already in place and I did not want any more rework. Honestly, I did not want the plumber around asking me to take pictures of his work. You don’t even want to know about this.
We used the space at the top of one set of stairs and made it into Housekeeping Storage. We turned the outdoor showers into pool storage. We assigned one area of the Kitchen as storage but still need shelving.
We store everything not needed in my office. This has to change and soon! But it all works and you learn to improvise and make do. Make do works when you don’t have guests. Guests deserve a tidy, organized business. This is my goal. My office desk is currently a folding table that doubles as a serving table. I don’t even have an office chair. I need a printer and shelves. Blah blah blah. Soon come.
Storage space is so important. Where do we keep the extra bedding, towels, mattresses, chairs, cleaning supplies, etc. We do have housekeeping storage, but its not enough space to hold extra mattresses or bed frames. The laundry room is complete but needs shelving. As I write this post the only other available space left to use is one of the two locker / shower rooms we have adjacent to the laundry room. I put these rooms in for the staff to use. One of these may just have to become a storage room and the other the staff shower room. Of note, any physical changes we do to the structure that are not on the original drawing – we will have to pay for new drawings and resubmit them to the Parish Council for approval. So adding a room to the building = physical change = new drawings = more money = delay in all of our papers being signed off. We did this once and it will not happen again. It is much easier just to build a separate outbuilding for storage.
The guest rooms have plenty of space for storage. Papa Poo and I currently use one of the larger rooms and stuff is stacked up against the walls. The closet is full, the dressers are full. Here’s a short list of what I have stacked up in the room – pictures to hang, vases for flowers, pens, papers, lights, decorating items, signs, drinking glasses, bottle openers, books, more decor items, fishing supplies, extra chairs, cushions, emergency kit, walking sticks, work boots, and enough shoes and clothes to open my own lady’s store. Providing we don’t have to rent out our room, we will be okay with storing stuff in there.
There is always something to do and it seems like there is always something to finish. We continue with our plan and try not to veer off course. At this stage, we are much closer to being finished. Every time we go to Villa Jewel Resort we are overwhelmed by the progress being made.
