What’s in a Name
What’s in a name? How do you choose a name for an all-inclusive resort?
Any idea how we named our boutique resort in Jamaica – Villa Jewel on the Rocks?
I pretty much said it in an earlier post – its our Diamond in the Rough – our Jewel.
Let’s backtrack a bit here. Once we had made our decision to build a guest house, I pushed for a boutique resort – a small intimate luxurious resort. A boutique resort where we can offer our guests an authentic jamaican vacation, exactly what we had been experiencing since visiting the Brighton community.
It had to be comfortable. It had to include elements that helped you relax, reboot and fall in love or rekindle your romantic. Exceptional service was a must. A place to return to because you have made new friends. Where the food is wholesome, organic, fresh and prepared the Jamaican way. Gardens needed to be colourful. Fruit available at your fingertips. It absolutely had to give the guests a true Jamaican experience.
Papa Poo and I went over all kinds of possibilities but these were the main elements we wanted to provide for our guests. We proceeded to form a Jamaican company but needed a name.
When we found the property we felt we had found our diamond in the rough. A jungle waiting to be transformed. It was our Jewel. We were going to start an all-inclusive Boutique Resort – so we went with Villa Jewel. But we didn’t want people to think it was just a house so we needed to add to the name. Because we are located on the rocky shores of Jamaica it just seemed natural to go with ‘Villa Jewel on the Rocks’. And doesn’t it also sound like a cool tropical drink?! So Villa Jewel on the Rocks we are.
Our dear son, Little Poo, thought perhaps we named the resort after my dearly departed shih tzu, Princess Jewel of the Nile – we called her Jewel, too. This is just a happy coincidence.
Fast forward to social media, search engines, instagram, facebook, twitter – what would people find user friendly ? www.villajewelresort.com. That’s us for social media. Short, sweet and to the point.
We hired a local firm, ThinkWerx, previously owned and operated by two exceptional people, Kelso & Ashley, to create our website and help us out with the social media aspect of the business. Best money spent! Their professionalism and creativity took us another step forward. A necessary step and one made less painful by their team. They came up with our logo and it was exactly what we were looking for. I only insisted on color.
This made me a very busy person, as I was constantly taking pictures whenever we are in Jamaica. Taking pictures, editing pictures, taking more pictures. My iphone currently has 8782 photos on the Cameral Roll and 324 videos. My Olympus E500 digital camera was also used to take numerous pictures. I only wanted to use picture I had actually taken for the website. I must say, that with the exception of a couple of the pictures, all pictures are my own. All pictures on facebook and instagram are picture Papa Poo or I have taken. We want to keep it real.
We launched the website before we were finished construction of the building to let people know who we were and what we offer. We actually could not take guests right away as there were no rooms to stay in, but we had a website!
Villa Jewel on the Rocks is an all-inclusive boutique resort in Brighton, Westmoreland, Jamaica. We offer 3 Jamaican inspired meals a day prepared by local chefs. We have a small bar/lounge called the SeaBreeze & Lime Lounge. We have the best swimming pool – a nice shallow entry mineral water swimming pool. We do not use chemicals in our mineral water pool. We offer Spa service with massages, body treatments and facials. Our rooms are all different. They are large and each one has a private balcony and excellent view of the sparkling Caribbean Sea. Our main goal is to offer our guests an authentic Jamaican vacation with exceptional guest service.
At the time of writing this post, we still do not have all the necessary paperwork to register with Tourism Jamaica, but we are working on it. Once we are registered we will be on a ‘go forward’ action plan to have a Grande Opening Month. Cause one day or one week is just not enough.
We are taking guests. You can actually book online or send an email for inquiries and group bookings.
I still love the name Villa Jewel on the Rocks. I haven’t invented the corresponding drink yet, but I am working on it. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
